Alma Haygood Literacy is a comprehensive reading tutoring and grant writing service based in the Northern Virginia area. It is owned and operated by Alma Haygood, a retired Fairfax County Public Schools educator. Alma has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Teaching (Alabama A & M University and George Mason University). She has worked with students in pre-school, kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grades. Alma has experience and training as a Classroom Teacher, Reading Resource Teacher, Reading Recovery Teacher and Math Resource Teacher.
Students who need extra help to achieve reading on grade level can benefit from reading tutoring. Reading tutoring can also be beneficial for helping students excel beyond grade level expectations. Tutoring sessions are designed for 35- 60 minutes (appropriate to child’s age). A plan to accelerate and individualize learning is set up after the first three sessions. The first sessions are designed to adequately assess the student's current reading level, gather information about reading and writing performance and set up an action plan for optimal progress. Teaching is deliberate and explicit to the child's current level of performance to help students achieve and excel.
The grant writing services include workshops for individual or small groups of teachers. The workshops are designed to teach educators the basics of how to write successful education grants.
What To Expect
Evaluation
In each of my sessions, there is a specific goal that I want to achieve with the child. The first session is the assessment where I go over each child’s specific goals for our time together. From the second meeting on, we begin each class with a review of the homework and review the material learned in the previous class. Each session introduces learning strategies and study skills children can apply to other subjects.
Consultation
Prior to starting sessions, I conduct an in-depth conversation about both the parent's expectations and their child's needs. During this meeting, we will discuss the parent's expectation as it relates to successfully meeting learning objectives, the child's current reading level, areas of difficulty, how well the child manages challenges, cost of sessions, and how my sessions are conducted. After the initial session, I will develop a literacy plan and schedule.
One-on-One Instruction
Alma is adept in building strong tutor-student relationships using an upbeat attitude, patience and personable communication. She is highly effective in working diligently one-on-one to promote success through hands-on tutoring and individualized support.
Support
Alma works with the parents to help them offer positive, supportive assistance to children with assignments. She highly encourages parents at home to show interest in helping children reach their potential to accelerate learning.
